Once you have made the decision to seek support from a therapist, you might wonder whether counselling or psychotherapy is best for you, and what the difference is between the two.

Choosing the right therapy

Although there are similarities in the work of a counsellor and a psychotherapist, there are also some differences. Both practices offer a way to talk about and think about difficulties you are facing in life and understand how they may have come about.

A counsellor is more likely to help a client with a current difficulty that is not rooted in the past, such as a bereavement. The work of a psychotherapist focuses more on difficulties that are deep-rooted in a person’s past experiences. Both are carried out in a safe, calm and confidential space, allowing you to make sense of what is happening or has happened to you.

Committed to supporting you

You might also be thinking about how long you will need to use the services of your chosen therapist. Again, although there can be differences, there are no hard and fast rules, and it’s down to you ultimately. Generally, counselling may last a number of weeks or months, while psychotherapy can go on for many months or even years, depending on you and your preferences.

I offer counselling and psychotherapy services that can be accessed in person or remotely, providing you with the flexibility to choose based on your preferences or location. My practice is open to young persons, adults, older adults, and couples who are seeking support with various life challenges.

Individuals: £55 per 50-minute session.

Couples: £75 per 50-minute session.
